I’ve been guilty of using the two terms, ‘laundry soap’ and ‘laundry detergent’ interchangeably. You’re probably wondering what’s the difference between the two?
Well, in short, laundry soap is what has been used traditionally to clean clothing and garments, it’s natural, biodegradable and made from plant and animal fats. On the contrary, laundry detergent is modern, man-made, not biodegradable and is filled with chemicals known to disrupt hormones, are linked to cancer and contribute to allergies and autoimmune conditions. So why put this garbage on your clothing, your skin will only absorb it!
Your laundry room is one of the dirtiest rooms in your home, when it should be the cleanest. I encourage you to evaluate all of the laundry products you have in your home and start reading those labels. You can also significantly cut down on your laundry room expenses by realizing you don’t need anything other than laundry soap and wool dryer balls to clean your clothing and linens. Skip the dryer sheets, fabric softeners, stain removers and bleach- they’re not necessary. You’ll save more money and you won’t be polluting your body, the air and waterways- yay!
It’s easy to transition too- you just need a laundry soap that is free of anything synthetic and chemicals and instead uses plant-based materials. My personal favourite laundry soap is the Thieves Laundry Soap from Young Living. It works great, doesn’t irritate anyone’s sensitive skin and is so concentrated I can make 3 bottles of laundry soap from 1 bottle.
Why I love this laundry soap
It’s free from SLS, Dyes, Petrochemicals, Formaldehyde, Phosphates, Synthetic Perfume and Fragrance, Phalates and Optical Brighteners.
Adding our own, natural ‘boosters’
By adding your own baking soda into the laundry soap, you will naturally brighten your whites and soften the water which means less soap is needed.
The addition of Thieves Household Cleaner is for removing stains. This cleaner is 100% natural and works wonders. I clean my entire home with it and nothing compares.
Even when I dilute the laundry soap and take 1 bottle and make it into 3, I still only use a 1/4 of a capful or about 1 tablespoon of soap. Most of us were brought up to believe we needed a big, overflowing capful of thick, blue goo in order to clean our clothing. It’s not true and in fact, over using a detergent will not only wear down your clothing faster, but it will have your washing machine filling up with soapy residue that causes an overgrowth of mildew, leaving your clothes sour and sweaty smelling. So, just remember with the Thieves Laundry Soap, less is more and YES it will seem very watery in comparison to conventional detergents. That’s ok.
Laundry Soap Recipe
Take 1 bottle of Thieves Laundry Soap and divide it amongst 2 empty bottles. If you don’t have any leftover Thieves Laundry Soap bottles, store 2/3 of the soap in a mason jar.
Then, add 2 capfuls of Thieves Household Cleaner (this stuff is magical, if you’re not cleaning your entire house with it, you’re missing out).
Next, add in 2 teaspoons of baking soda.
The next step is optional but if you like a little bit of a natural scent to your laundry, add in some essential oils. Make sure you select ones that don’t have any colour or tint to them such as Blue Tansy as it can stain.
The great thing about the Thieves Laundry Soap is that it has a very subtle yet pleasant smell on it’s own, so you don’t need to add anything to it if you prefer to go scent-free.
However, I like a little bit of a scent so I usually enjoy adding in Lavender, Joy, Grapefruit and Purification.
Lavender is what I like washing our sheets in.
Joy and Grapefruit together are great for everyday freshness for clothing
And, Purification is what I use for potentially stinky stuff like gym clothes, tea towels, work clothes etc. Purification is a blend that naturally eliminates odour. You can use it anywhere you have an undesired smell. I like adding a drop to the kitchen garbage bins and compost bins.
I like a gentle smell so I add 10 drops of each, but add as much or as little as you like. Remember, the Young Living essential oils are free of anything synthetic and aren’t cut with any ingredients so a little goes a long way.
The last step is to fill each bottle with warm water and shake to combine everything.
Shake the bottle well before each use.
