Bulletproof Coffee |recipe and benefits|
Hands up if you’re a coffee lover (HI!). How about a coffee that offers you sustained, prolonged energy for the day…YES! This is exactly why I started drinking Bulletproof Coffee’s a few years ago. I love the latte-esque consistency and flavour Bulletproof Coffee has but I do it every morning because of the benefits I’ve felt since incorporating it.
Bulletproof coffee was started by Dave Asprey in 2013. Technically, Bulletproof is more than just the coffee, it’s a book, a nutrition company and a modern day lifestyle. Dave is a well-known influencer and self proclaimed ‘bio-hacker’ in the health sphere. Having dropped 100-pounds and increased his IQ by an impressive 20 points by answering his own nagging question: “what are the simplest things you can do to be better at everything?” He spent time, money and research and came up with the “Bulletproof” philosophy; ‘live in the state of high performance where you take control of and improve your biochemistry, your body, and your mind so they work in unison, helping you execute at levels far beyond what you’d expect, without burning out, getting sick, or allowing stress to control your decisions.’
While I don’t personally follow the entire blueprint that is the Bulletproof lifestyle, I have picked up a few tips from Dave and can attest to the fact that Bulletproof coffee has led me to have better performance in all aspects of my life.
Bulletproof coffee, AKA butter coffee is an emulsion of organic coconut oil, grass-fed butter and organic, freshly brewed hot coffee. Mine however also has collagen and cinnamon (recipe below). The Bulletproof recipe includes using their own products, which I don’t do- I use organic coffee and coconut oil in place of MCT oil or Brain Octane. I’ve played around with both in place of coconut oil and I can’t say I felt any better, so for economics sake and less products in my pantry, I just use organic coconut oil from Costco.

“Baby brain” which just morphs into “Mom brain” is a real life phenomenon all Mom and Dads experience when they bring children into the world. Your brain will never work harder and be more bombarded with diverting attention and attempts to multi task than during the early parenting years. The brain works in a different, primally protective way when you become a parent. From a primal, instinctual standpoint, this is your most important job: nurture your young. You burn through brain energy and brain nutrients are desperately needed. Coupled with lack of sleep, your mental energy takes a plummet. You may find you’ve been more disorganized, forgetful, foggy brained and mentally drained since becoming a parent. This was one of the reasons I was so intrigued by Bulletproof Coffee- my brain simply didn’t feel quite as sharp as it once did and I wanted that back! It helped significantly.
If you’re looking to burn fat specifically, your body needs to switch from using glucose (sugar) as its primary fuel source to ketones. MCT (medium-chain triglycerides) oil turns into ketones which give you energy without the crash. Coconut oil on it’s own still has 65% MCTs although a regular MCT oil will have higher concentrations. It is recommended to use Brain Octane specifically if you’re looking to get into ketosis quickly and lose weight- Brain Octane is 4 times more effective at raising your ketone levels than regular old coconut oil. I don’t measure ketones but if that’s your jam, Brain Octane may be worth it. I will say, I’ve noticed less sugar cravings midday since doing Bulletproof Coffee, which has been a factor in fat loss for me. Since the coffee has a high fat content, satiety is achieved after 1 cup of coffee. Since we’re using the right kinds of fats, fat gain isn’t an issue.
In general coffee is packed with bioflavonoids and antioxidants, these help clear up free radicals which can lead to less than optimal brain health. Antioxidants are known to contribute to improved cardiovascular health, a decreased risk of cancer and slowing down the aging process (to name a few).
Ensure that you’re buying good quality coffee beans to reap these benefits. Conventional coffee is one of the highest sprayed crops, meaning, you’ll be ingesting a ton of toxins if you skip out on a certified organic brand.
The good quality fats that are in Bulletproof Coffee offer nutrients like vitamins K2, D, A and E which are nutrients your brain needs to function optimally. Here’s how I make Bulletproof Coffee
- Prep Time: 2 minutes
- Total Time: 2 minutes
- Yield: 2 minutes
- Category: coffee
- 1.5 cups of freshly brewed, organic coffee
- 1/2 tbsp organic coconut oil
- 1/2 tbsp grass-fed butter
- 1 tbsp collagen powder
- A pinch of cinnamon
- Add all of your ingredients to a blender, with the exception of the cinnamon
- Blend on high for 15-20 seconds
- Pour into your favourite mug
- Top with cinnamon
