It’s always fun to learn about new foods and it’s even more fun to play around with them and create something delcious! The Baru seed is a new item for us and I wanted to share some fun facts about it as well as give you a recipe.

Baru Seeds- they look like peanuts, but they’re not

  • they’re a legume seed from Brazil
  • low in carbs with a good amount of protein, with a 2:1 protein-carb ratio
  • complete essential and non-essential amino acid profile
  • low GI
  • appropriate for a paleo, keto, vegetarian or vegan lifestyle
  • they contain antixoidants, fibre and minerals
  • From Baru Baron’s website (Baru seed comapny)- “Baru seeds are a well-kept secret from the South American Cerrado, the richest savanna in the world- threatened by deforestation, it is a vital part of the complex Amazon rainforest water cycle. Baru Seed Trail Mix

Here’s one simple way you can incorporate Baru seeds into your diet (school safe too!)

  • 1/2 cap Baru seeds
  • 1 cup dried apricots
  • 1 cup of plantain chips, gently crushed
  • 1/2 ginger flavoured dark chocolate bar, broken into small pieces
  • 2 tbsp large coconut flakes
  • 1/2 tsp pink Himalayan sea salt


  1. Simply mix all of your ingredients together and store in a mason jar
  2. Enjoy!
