Stinky, overly sweaty pits?
If you have ever struggled with body odour or if you’re switching from a conventional antiperspirant to a natural deodorant and you notice you’re sweating excessively or are emitting an undesirable odour- you may need to do an armpit detox.
An armpit detox can make a world of difference. Without it, I don’t think I would have been able to stick to a natural deodorant.
Antiperspirant vs. Deodorant
When switching from an antiperspirant to a deodorant, you’ll notice your underarms sweating frequently throughout the day. This is completely normal and it’s a good thing! By nature, an antiperspirant is designed to stop sweat by clogging the pores of the underarms, preventing toxins from being removed by the body. While convenient, it isn’t ideal. Your body is designed to sweat. It’s an inherent detoxification system. We need to allow our bodies to sweat! A deodorant simply helps prevent or reduce odours. Most antiperspirants today also contain a fragrance which deodorizes odours. Fragrances are not ideal because they’re artificial, made in a lab by man and composed of chemicals, that we, as the consumer aren’t aware of. The chemicals a fragrance contains don’t have to be declared on a label by law because it is considered the company who manufactures the products trade secret.
Back to our underarms…The stench doesn’t come from the sweat under your arms, it comes from the bacteria in that area.
The more bacteria, the stronger the smell. Topically there’s a lot we can do but there’s also an internal piece to consider when eliminating body odour. Consider your diet. Are you over consuming refined carbohydrates, eating too many packaged and processed foods or indulging in too many sugary things? Chances are, the cleaner your diet, the less likely your body is to have an abundance of bad (pathogenic) bacteria taking over the good (beneficial) bacteria.
I also suggest taking a good quality probiotic and drinking lots of water while you transition. It’s perfectly normal to sweat a lot initially. After a few weeks you should notice it slows down and you aren’t constantly sweating.
The Armpit Detox- how to do it
Start with freshly cleaned underarms.
In a small bowl mix together 1 tbsp of Beautycounter’s Charcoal Face Mask ( http://bit.ly/2I6daIo ) with a little bit of apple cider vinegar (about 1/2-1tsp).
Please note that the packaging you see online is the new packaging. The one I have in the video below is the old packaging but the products are the exact same.
Ensure the consistency isn’t too runny as you’ll be applying it to your underarms and want it to stay put.
Alternatively, you can mix 1 tbsp of bentonite clay with 1 tsp of activated charcoal (optional) and add a bit of water to reach a consistency that works for you. This method works well too but it’s messier, takes a little longer and is more drying that using the mask.
Apply the mixture to your underarms and allow it to dry for 15-20 minutes.
Do this daily for 1-2 weeks (typically, 1 week is sufficient for most people).
Natural Deodorant- one that actually works
Now, the BEST deodorant on the market, hands down is Primally Pure ( http://bit.ly/2VvhMzG ). It’s the only deodorant that has ever worked for me, lasted an entire day without reapplying and withstands my workouts. It’s also the only deodorant I’ve never had a reaction to- I’m going on 2+ years of using this one exclusively.
Most natural deodorants worked for me for a few months and then they would either stop working and I would smell again OR my skin would break out, develop a painful rash and I wouldn’t be able to do anything for several days- not ideal!
The ingredients in the Primally Pure deodorant are amazing. They’re also incredibly soothing (thanks to the grass-fed tallow) so even if you have a rash you’ll most likely be able to wear their deodorant. I suggest using the unscented one first.
My favourites have been the charcoal, blue tansy and tea tree. If you want to purchase this deodorant, use my name at checkout (LEIGH) and you can save 10% off your order. If you’re in Canada, keep in mind the prices are in US dollars and you will be charged duties.
Detox on, friends!
