Have you ever considered where to even begin when it comes to helping your Picky Eater? Likely you just want him to start eating better, but where to begin? How do you go about that process?

It starts with baby steps, steps that help lead your child to success. Like any process a goal needs to be set so you have a clear understanding of what you want to see your child accomplish.

Setting a GOAL for your child who is a Picky Eater can help you get clear about what you should and should not be focusing on.

A food-related goal looks different for each child but it should always be met with Guidance, Opportunity, Appreciation, Leadership and Support.

When you set a goal for your child ask yourself the following questions:

Am I guiding my child in a healthy way so that he knows I’m here coaching him on this journey?

Am I giving my child the opportunity to achieve the goal? Make sure the goal isn’t too difficult or too easy.

Am I showing my child that I appreciate the effort he is making? Effort deserves praise more than achievement.

Am I being a positive, calm and confident leader? Am I a positive role model for my child? Am I leading by example?

Am I consistently supporting him when he fails and when he’s victorious?

Focus on one small, attainable goal at a time and gradually build up from there. You can continue to add goals for your child as he achieves them so that you’re always working towards beginning and maintaining a healthy, life-long relationship with food and the food experience.

Some examples of food-related goals you can set for your Picky Eater include:

Helping you to prepare the meal

Going to the grocery store with you

Showing up to the dinner table

Talking about a new food

Allowing a new food to be on the table

Allowing the food to be on the plate

Touching the food

Smelling the food

Tasting the food

Eating the food

Some of these goals may seem like they’re very simple and basic but they’re foundational for re-framing the way your child sees food and the food experience. These “baby steps” are how we begin to invite our children into forming a healthy, safe and comfortable relationship with food which is especially important for children who are apprehensive, fearful, stressed or anxious around meal time.
